Work in progress – Circular Zentangle

After doing the number 5 drawing yesterday, I thought, why don’t I do more circular drawings? Isn’t it funny when you have a thought like that and then think, how did I never think of this before?

Tomorrow I think I will add some color to this, rather than the usual pencil-shading. I’m thinking colored pencils.

Constructive criticism is always welcome!

  1. There’s something satisfying about a circular work of art. Especially if it seems to move or the gradations of the design seem to blend into each other. I like it when you really don’t know where the beginning, middle or end is — it just flows. In this case, there seems to be a place where the two directions come together at the top and you can tell it is the top. I wonder if there is a way to bring that together so you could rotate the design and not be able to tell where it begins or ends. Maybe it’s that whole circle of life concept that resonates with me, not sure. Really interesting work!

    1. It’s funny, I considered titling this “circle of life”, but didn’t think there was enough life in it. 🙂

I was also looking at that white zigzag space at the top and thinking about filling it in somehow. I did want it to look like the pattern was covering a sphere, rather than a flat circle, which is why I didn’t close off some of the designs – I figured as I add color I can make it look more round.

When I was in college I had a reputation for using a lot of circles and curves in my designs. I couldn’t help it – I find them more interesting than straight lines. It’s why I was into landscape architecture and not structural architecture!

  2. Could you expand some of the “vines” beyond the line of the circle border to make it more 3D? I think curved lines lead the eye just like curved paths in the garden. Your imagination sees beyond the edges! Maybe when you add color and shading it will exude more life.
